Should I Get A Varicose Vein Treatment?

Anybody would agree that having those varicose veins isn’t attractive. Rather, they are unsightly, and they make you look unhealthy. That’s especially true when you have the kind that bulges, swells, and even causes ulcers. Many people with this condition have asked this question, should I get my varicose veins treated?

While varicose veins are usually not a very serious condition in most people, it can be a health concern for some when it causes pain, discomfort and complications. At this point, you might probably want to decide to have your condition checked by a board-certified vein specialist and get appropriate treatment for your varicose veins.

Types of Varicose Veins

Some varicose veins, also known as spider veins, look worse than the others, while some just look like a minor flaw. Here are some of the usual kinds of varicose veins:

  • Trunk varicose veins: These are thick and swollen varicose veins that bulge under the skin. In some worse cases, the veins even look as if these were the small intestine that has moved somewhere else on a person’s body.
  • Reticular varicose veins: Reticular varicose veins appear as red, closely-grouped veins under the surface of the skin.
  • Telangiectasia varicose veins: These are small clusters of veins that are usually blue or red. Telangiectasia varicose veins are also known as spider veins or thread veins, which typically appears on the face or legs. They don’t pose serious risks to the person who has this condition. This type isn’t as unsightly as the trunk varicose veins because they do not thicken or bulge under the skin.

Why Would Someone Consider a Varicose Vein Treatment?

As mentioned by a varicose veins clinic located in Dallas, varicose veins in most people do not cause serious problems. Instead, they are just a minor flaw appearing on the skin. However, one may consider having her varicose veins treated for cosmetic reasons. After all, if there’s a way we can beautify oneself more, why don’t we do it if we have the capabilities?

On the other hand, the main reason why you would consider seeking medical attention for this condition is to alleviate the symptoms that come along with it. In some individuals, varicose veins are worse than they cause complications. You probably need medical assistance if you experience complications, or even if you don’t experience any of these yet, having your varicose veins treated will help you avoid this severe risk.

Varicose veins may lead to any of these complications:

• Bleeding

When the skin over it is wounded, varicose veins may bleed. This kind of bleeding could be difficult to stop even if you have already taken first aid methods such as raising your leg and applying direct pressure to the wound. If this occurs, do not delay seeking medical assistance! Bleeding should be stopped as soon as possible.

• Thrombophlebitis

Varicose veins may cause blood clots which can lead to Thrombophlebitis, an inflammation of the veins.

• Deep vein thrombosis

This condition causes pain and inflammation in the legs. It can also cause another serious complication such as pulmonary embolism.

• Chronic venous insufficiency

Due to improper blood circulation in your veins, your skin may not exchange nutrients, oxygen, and waste with your blood in the proper way it should function. When this situation occurs for a long time, it causes chronic venous insufficiency. This condition may lead to disorders such as venous leg ulcers, varicose eczema, and lipodermatosclerosis.

Treatment Options

You may only know what treatment option that’s best for you is after you’ve consulted a vein doctor who would conduct several examinations of your veins. The results will then show the specific condition you are experiencing, and your doctor will discuss with you several treatment options. Can you get varicose veins treatment on the NHS? Learn more about that here.

At first, your vein specialist may suggest that you wear compression stockings to improve blood circulation in your legs. While wearing compression stockings is uncomfortable at times, many patients have found it beneficial. However, before you use it, you must undergo a special test that would show the condition of your blood circulation. In some cases, wearing compression stockings is not recommended. This would depend on the result of your examination.

  • Thanks Collins for excellent post Varicose vein is a serious medical condition that warrants urgent medical attention immediately it is discovered. Even the apparent benign ones may become life threatening if not attended to. Any person with tortuous veins in any part of the body should consult a medical doctor for attention. I am more interested in prevention of varicose veins as, they say, prevention is better than cure. Few things we can do to prevent the development of varicose veins include: exercising, weight control, avoiding long periods of standing or sitting, not wearing tight clothes and leg elevation, etc. Thanks once again.
