Having a good night’s sleep is not a luxury but a necessity. After all, this is the time when the body unwinds and
repairs itself. But many of us are unable to sleep well at night. In fact, research reveals the fact that almost 30—40
percent of the adults are unable to sleep well at night and suffer from insomnia.
Insomnia can happen because of dejection, loss, high stress at work, relationship stress and pain. It can also occur because of some underlying ailments like sleep apnea or because of the medications you take or because of some other reasons.
Here are some of the major reasons why you may be staying awake at night. Juts take a look.
7 Reasons Why You Can’t Sleep at Night
1. You Are Too Stressed
Stress happens to be one of the most common reasons that you cannot sleep. A tough family situation, a bad day at work or financial stresses can keep you
awake night after night when you retire to bed with a head full of thoughts. Here are some ways by following which you can reduce your stress levels:
➔ You can keep a journal by your bedside and write about the stressful thoughts for relieving yourself from them.
➔ You can exercise to burn off some steam.
➔ Read a light-hearted book or listen to soft music before retiring to bed.
➔ Perform light yoga, meditate or try progressive muscle relaxations.
➔ You could also try some herbal products from a dispensary such as https://getkush.cc/online-
2. Go for Excessive Caffeine Intake
Do you wake up at the middle of the night or are you a morning person? According to research, the amount of caffeine that you have consumed can be related to your lack of sleep. This is simply because it can take hours before the caffeine clears from your system and it blocks the very thing that signals your body about its sleepiness, which is adenosine. So to offer yourself quality sleep at night stay away from any type of coffee, cola, tea, and any caffeine product post lunch.
3. Your Room Is Not Sufficiently Dark
There should not be any light in your bedroom as you sleep, and this especially includes the light emitted by the electronic devices like televisions. When your eyes are exposed to light at night, your eyes get tricked into believing
that it is time to wake up and it decreases the production of melatonin. This is the hormone that is released by the pineal gland that lowers the body temperature and causes sleepiness.
The light emitted by the electronic device mimics sunlight, and hence the electronic devices are especially troublesome. You can read this article on how lights can affect your mood and health.
4. You Are Not Exercising Sufficiently
Research shows that exercising on a regular basis can ease the anxiety so that you can sleep better. And as opposed to the popular beliefs, exercising late at night is not going to disturb your sleep at night. So for most of the days, you should
aim for some types of exercise even if it is just for a few minutes.
5. You Are Consuming Alcohol Before Going to Bed
You may think that cocktail before bedtime is going to help you to sleep well. But unfortunately, that is not the case. Your quality of sleep can get disrupted because of the consumption of alcohol. As the effect of the alcohol wears off with the metabolization, it prevents the deep sleep that causes the restless
sleep throughout the night. You should consider limiting the amount of alcohol before retiring to the bed.
6. You Are Depressed
The physical changes of depression just like appetite can swing to either extremes. You can suddenly find that you are sleeping all day and are tired or that you are unable to close your eyes completely. A common form of sleep deprivation is when you find yourself waking up in the middle of night and this continues for several nights.
7. You Have Sleep Apnea
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people have mild insomnia. Insomnia can
be caused by a plethora of reasons including psychological or other medical conditions like anxiety, depression, neurodegenerative disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. People
who have sleep apnea also suffer from insomnia. During the sleep, sleep apnea causes the airways to be blocked which makes the person wake up repeatedly all through the night that disrupts the sleep cycle.
The above are some of reasons why you can’t sleep at night. If you are suffering from sleep deprivation constantly, it is important that you see a sleep specialist Brooklyn who can reveal the true reason of your insomnia and can guide you to come out of the condition.

Thank you very much for such useful information! I think my reason is don’t have enough exercising …
I’d love to say this was an interesting read, but it really wasn’t. Although it’s not an exact copy, I’ve seen so many posts say the same thing. It’s not exactly news to us, and although you gave it different subheadings, it’s not telling me anything that I haven’t seen 50 times before. I was hoping for a fresh spin on it, and was sorely disappointed.
Well, I think how we tell the message has little importance. What is important, is the message. Staying healthy is continuous effort, so you have to be constantly reminded by the same articles on the same issues, and in many cases, the same way.
Thank you so much for sharing this post.I sometimes struggle to fall asleep, thanks to you now I can understand the reasons.
I am proud to admit that I sleep pretty much like a baby on the nightly. Well, actually the baby comparison is not a good one because baby’s don’t sleep through the night. LOL! Let’s just say, I SLEEP really well! That’s to exercise, not drinking too much caffeine before bed and just practicing healthy habits I guess!
I’m glad you sleep well. Good sleep equals good health.
These are all great reasons for not being able to sleep at night. Lucky for me, I never have trouble sleeping!
Wow! Learned a lot today. I should tell my wife to ditch the side lights in our room. I have been having sleep issues after we installed them.
Nice article! Sleep is so important! I would add that staring at a screen, phone or laptop, before going to bed is another bad habit which decreases the quality of your sleep.
You’re right. Those too are important.

I was wondering why I wasn’t sleeping well this last few nights, so it was the stress and the excessive coffee intake, that is due to stress in not being sure if I will be able to get everything done, thank you for sharing this, there are a lot of reasons one could be unable to sleep, but if they can be identified then they can be taken care of.
I’m really glad that you could identify the issues bothering you.
I haven’t been out much these days (working from home, plus cold and snow outside) and the lack of walking as much as I normally did has had a negative impact on my sleep, you’re right.
